Tandy Skills: Bonding Leather Tutorial

Bonding Leather

Tandy has a variety of leather adhesives used to stack leather. It is important to think about whether you need permanent adhesion or to temporarily hold your project in place as you sew. Make sure that your project is completely dry before taping. If you are working outdoors, keep your project out of direct sunlight and extreme heat. When applying liquid adhesive, be sure to cover your workspace and wear gloves. We used plastic sheeting under our paper to protect our work surface. If you are using leather cement, be sure to be in a well-ventilated area. Here are three different methods to bond leather:

Using Tape

Use contact style tape for permanent adhesion or adjustable adhesion. Don't be without this handy tape when lining up two pieces of leather for lacing, stitching, or when using punches or chisels. Save time and eliminate the need for messy and smelly adhesives by using this extremely sticky, double-sided tape. Simply place in between the two layers of leather and begin your work immediately.

Using Water-Based Adhesive

Eco-Flo® Leathercraft Glue, and Leather Weld Adhesive, are both water-based, low V.O.C. polymer glue for leather, wood, fabric, paper, and other materials. Provides a fast setting, strong, and flexible bond that dries clear.

EcoWeld® Water Based Contact Adhesive is non-toxic, water-based adhesive is specifically designed for the manufacturers of fine leather goods. This amazingly strong contact adhesive is ideal for bonding various types of leathers, including bags, shoe uppers, wallets, heels, and orthopedic insoles. This adhesive utilizes the same basic application methods as solvent based cement, with the additional option of spray application.

When applying water-based adhesives apply a thin layer to each side and spread with a glue spreader. Allow the adhesive to get sticky, then apply another thin coat. Once that layer is also tacky you can stack your leather.

Using Cement

Tanner’s Bond Contact Cement is our best all-purpose cement. Holds quickly and permanently. It’s flexible so leather will not become stiff and brittle. Waterproof and easy to apply. Brush included in lid.

Tanner's Bond quick dry rubber cement was designed especially for leatherwork. Holds firm, yet parts can easily be taken apart if adjustment is needed. Perfect for holding projects together while lacing or putting in linings. Brush included in lid.

Barge All-Purpose Cement is outstanding for bonding most leather, rubber, wood, glass, cork, metal materials. Designed originally for attaching soles, this is a favorite among leathercrafters for a variety of projects. Easy spreading, non-smearing, extremely flexible, long tack, supple and versatile.
